Innovation in cities: Reclaiming the term and equipping cities for persistent and future challenges

The term “innovation” has been overused to the point where it has lost credibility and slipped into jargon. Regardless of how misused the word is, innovation is critical to developing creative and collaborative solutions to complex problems. Considering the complexities emerging, including those resulting from the climate crisis, cities and local governments must develop the necessary capabilities to innovate and undertake ambitious, transformative action.

Considering the increasing complexities that cities and local governments face, innovation is vital to realizing ambitious, transformative climate change action. Innovation in response to complex and systemic challenges of this nature cannot be incremental. Project-based or siloed innovation will not be sufficient. Effectively intervening calls for innovation that cuts across academia, business and the private sector, and local governments.
