D2 - Strengthening local capacity for resilient development: Cities leading the way

The COVID-19 pandemic and the anticipated post-pandemic world is putting pressure on cities, where local governments need to act on the tangible socio-economic and ecological inequalities highlighted by the health crisis. This focus is in addition to the day-to-day service delivery and administration, while coping with and planning for expected and possible climate change impacts. Currently available in-house capacity is at its limit in many cases, exacerbated by financial and capacity constraints. Considering this context, it is imperative to enable and scale up urban sustainable development, localizing the SDGs and especially addressing resilient development as an essential competence area for every local government in the world.
