D1 – Beyond electric cars: Transforming sustainable mobility for equitable and climate-neutral cities

Transport and mobility play a vital role in our cities and regions. They have a huge impact on quality of life, economic employment and growth. They also come at a cost: transport emissions have grown faster than many other sectors in the past 50 years.

Electric mobility will play a crucial role in decarbonizing transport in cities when they are part of a systemic approach linked to urban planning and sustainable energy systems. Debunking the assumption of electric cars as the silver bullet for the transport transition, front-runner cities worldwide have taken action to untap the potential of public transport and active mobility. A future-proof urban mobility will be active, public, digital, shared, and electric, powered by renewable energies to shape equitable and climate neutral cities.
