DV1 – Circularity to overcome plastic waste management challenges

The World Bank estimates that globally by 2050, 3.4 billion tonnes of solid waste will be generated annually. A number of factors such as urbanisation, growing population, changing consumption patterns and lifestyles are contributing to this growth. Only about 9% of the plastic waste generated globally is recycled. Some of the reasons for this is poor segregation and mixed waste collection, that make it difficult for recyclers to reuse the waste in a financially viable manner. But this huge amount of waste cannot be dealt with effectively without resorting to a circular management if we want to build sustainable cities.
