BV1 - Bringing the Urban World back to peace and sustainability: Power of urban diplomacy
ICLEI World Congress 2022 is convened at a time multiple-crises; a once-in-a-generation pandemic, intensifying climate emergency and loss of nature, soaring of our consumption and wastes and more recently, growing threats of a new World War.
But the 21st century Urban World offers humanity two unique opportunities; the power of sustainable and integrated urban development and the benefits of multilevel and cooperative action, to accelerate into an emergency mode of action for sustainability globally.
In 2022, 50 years after Stockholm and 30 years after Rio Conferences, efforts for multilevel action will be accelerated; G7 countries will convene the first-ever sustainable urbanization Ministerial in September 2022, UNHabitat decided to convene the first-ever climate and urbanization ministerial at COP27 in Egypt in November 2022, a deal for nature will be adopted including the 2nd 10-year action Plan for cities and subnational governments, the United Nations Secretary General will launch his Advisory Group of Local and Regional Governments as part of his Our Common Agenda efforts under the UN reforms.
As the focal point of the Global Task Force of Local Governments at the Rio Conventions and other relevant process, ICLEI will continue its active leadership in these efforts.
This session will capture latest updates and provide an opportunity for ICLEI World Congress 2022 leaders to provide additional insights into these efforts.
